Mastercard SecureCode Credit Card FAQs

  • What is Mastercard SecureCode?

Mastercard SecureCode protects your credit card against unauthorised use when you shop online at participating retailers.

  • How do I identify a participating retailer?

You’ll see this logo on the participating retailer’s website:

  • How much does it cost to use the Mastercard SecureCode Service?

It's free to use the Mastercard SecureCode service.

  • Do I need to register my Credit card for the Mastercard SecureCode service?

No, all cards are automatically registered for the service. All you need to do is make sure your mobile number is registered with us, because we may send you a one time passcode (OTP) to complete the online transaction.

  • What if I have an authorised user on my credit card?

The authorised user must also register their mobile number with us to use the Mastercard SecureCode service.

  • What is an OTP?

OTP is a 'one time passcode'. It's a random number we send to your mobile number registered with us. When you enter it, it allows the Bank to identify you and ensures that a greater level of security is applied to your transaction.

  • How does it work?

When you use your card online with a retailer who uses the Mastercard SecureCode service, a Mastercard SecureCode screen will appear, if authentication is required. You will be asked for the last four digits of your mobile number. Then another screen will appear asking you to enter the OTP we sent to you by text message. This confirms your identity. When the transaction goes ahead you are accepting our Mastercard SecureCode Terms and Conditions.

  • How will I know the text is from First Trust Bank?

The sender ID on the text message from First Trust Bank will be FTB.  We will not ask you for account numbers or PIN numbers. We will only provide the OTP in the text message. We will not request you to respond to the text message.

  • What will the text say?

Here is a sample of the text we may send you. It will not identify you or your card:

FTB: For your Mastercard SecureCode transaction at Amazon Digital for GBP 000000000, please use this One Time Code; 12345678 within five minutes. Thank you.

  • How long is the OTP valid for?

It’s temporary and designed to be used for one transaction and lasts for five minutes.

  • What if I do not receive my OTP within 5 minutes?

If you do not receive your OTP within five minutes, click on the 'Send new one time passcode' link on the Mastercard SecureCode screen and a new OTP will be sent.

  • What if I do not receive my OTP after clicking on the 'Send new one time passcode' link?

  • My OTP is blocked, what should I do?

    Please contact us at 028 9032 8679.

  • What is the registered mobile number?

The registered mobile number is a mobile number which we have on record for you. We will show the last 4 digits of your mobile number on the Mastercard SecureCode screen when we send you the OTP. You may not be able to proceed with your online purchase if we do not have a valid mobile number registered for you. You can register your mobile number with us, by calling us on 028 9032 8679.

  • Why do I need to enter last 4 digits of my registered mobile number?

This confirms your mobile number and that we are sending the OTP to the correct mobile number.

  • How can I check what number you have on file in order to text me?

    Please contact us at 028 9032 8679.

  • How do I change my mobile number?

    Please contact us at 028 9032 8679.

  • What if I don’t have a mobile phone or experience difficulty using the service?

    Please contact us at 028 9032 8679.

  • Can I opt out of receiving OTP's?

No, all cards are automatically registered for the service and if you use your card to make an online purchase with a retailer who uses the Mastercard SecureCode service where authentication is required, you will be prompted to enter the OTP sent to you through text message.

  • Is there a cost to receive the OTP?

Charges may vary – please refer to your service provider.

  • Can I choose not to proceed with the payment?

Yes, you can click the cancel button on the Mastercard SecureCode screen and this will take you back to the retailer’s website.
