How do I pay a bill?

You can pay bills from your accounts to a wide range of companies by selecting ‘Pay an Existing Bill’ or ‘Pay a New Bill’. New bill details are automatically saved to your ‘Payees’ list.

You cannot pay bills from your First Trust Bank Visa card or Mastercard to any companies in the following categories:

  • Credit card
  • Charge card
  • Finance
  • Life and pensions
  • Personal loans

Before you select ‘Confirm’ to complete your payment, make sure the details you have entered are correct. Once confirmed, the payment will go out of your First Trust Bank account immediately.

  • If you are paying your First Trust Bank Visa card or Mastercard account, the payment will go into the account on the same banking day.
  • If you are paying a bill to another company, the payment will normally be received within two hours but no later than the next banking day.

  • I need to make a payment to my credit card, how do I do this via Online Banking?

To make a payment to your credit card, select ‘Pay a New Bill’ from the ‘Pay & Transfer’ drop down menu. Follow the onscreen instructions. You will need the 16 digit credit card number or the account number/reference. You will also need your card reader to complete the transaction for the first time.

Please note: When you are accepted for a First Trust Bank Visa or Mastercard credit card the credit card is not added to your list of payees. The details will be saved automatically to your list of payees when you pay your First Trust Bank credit card for the first time.

  • I can’t find the company I need to pay in the list of billers, what should I do?

If a company is not included in the list of billers you may be able to pay them via ‘Transfer to another UK Account’ if the company accepts online transfers. You will need the company’s sort code and account number and you must include the reference or account number of the bill you are paying in the ‘Receiver message’ field so the company can credit the payment to your account.

  • I need to pay a bill next week, but I’m away and will have no access to my Online Banking, what can I do?

You can forward date a bill payment up to 28 days in the future. Select either ‘Pay a New Bill or ‘Pay an Existing Bill’ (if you have paid this bill before). Follow the onscreen instructions until you reach the ‘Date of Bill Payment’ field. Enter the date you wish the payment to be made, in the box provided.

Please note: Bill payments are sent after 4.30pm on the date selected. The receiver’s bank will usually be credited within two hours, but no later than the next banking day. You will need your card reader to complete the transaction for the first time.

Please make sure you have enough money in your account on the date you have selected to make the bill payment. If you do not have enough money in your account the payment will not go out of your account. Please be aware that you will not receive any notice to tell you this transaction has failed.

  • I completed a bill payment to my credit card on Sunday, it has debited my account, but it has not been received by the credit card company. Why is this?

Transfers and Bill Payments will debit your account immediately, and will be received within two hours, but no later than the next banking day.

It will depend on your credit card provider when you will see this payment on your statement with them.

  • I have just made a bill payment to my First Trust Bank credit card, but I can’t see this on my credit card statement?

When you are paying your First Trust Bank Visa or Mastercard account via Online Banking if the payment is made before 6pm, it will credit the account on the same banking day.

If the payment is made after 6pm, it will be credited to your credit card account on the next banking day.

The payment is not detailed on your credit card statement straight away. However, this will be updated overnight and the payment will show as having credited to your account on the date the payment was made.
